OTHER TIMES, OTHER SPACES: A LIFE SPENT
IN THE FUTURE
by Robert Silverberg
Isaac Asimov is dead. So are Robert
Heinlein, Philip K. Dick, and Arthur C. Clarke. These were all
authors of the first rank in the field of science fiction. Yet
there is a Master of Science Fiction still alive and writing,
and pretty much taken for granted, and he is Robert Silverberg.
His new autobiographical book, Other Times, Other Spaces: A
Life Spent in the Future (Nonstop Press), shows how, as a
survivor from the mid-20th century golden age of the genre,
both the field and Silverberg grew up and matured together.
As Silverberg writes in his introduction
to the book: “In the course of my six decades of writing,
I’ve witnessed the transition of science fiction
publishing from being a pulp-magazine-centered field to one
dominated by mass-market paperback companies, and I’ve
known and dealt with virtually every editor who played a role
in that evolution. For much of that time I was close to the
center of the field as writer and sometimes as editor, not only
deeply involved in its commercial mutations, but also privy to
all the personal and professional gossip that it generated. All
that special knowledge has left me with a sense of my
responsibility to the field’s historians. I was there, I
did this and did that, I worked with this great editor and that
one, I knew all but a handful of the major writers on a
first-name basis, and all of that will be lost if I don’t
make some sort of record of it. Therefore it behooves me to set
down an account of those experiences for those who will find
them of value.”
Some of Silverberg’s
taken-for-granted status may be due to the under-representation
of his work in film or TV, though this is fast changing with a
production, based on his masterwork Dying Inside, now shooting
in France. He has not had Philip K. Dick’s luck in having
his works filmed or collected in The Library of American
Writers series. (However, it should be noted that most of
Dick’s fame came posthumously.) Like Dick, Silverberg is
super-prolific, as the condensed bibliography at the back of
Other Times, Other Spaces shows, with over a hundred novels and
over a thousand short stories to his credit. Also, like Dick
early on, he is well known by the science fiction cognoscenti
for the visionary quality of his books. Sooner or later the
rest of the world will have to play catch-up.
The graybeard Silverberg turned 74
earlier this year. In the heavily illustrated Other Times,
Other Spaces, he appears in good health and should be around
for many years to come.
